Favour Surrounds Me (I am Favoured)
Passages: Psalms 5:12
Song: Favour – Lawrence Oyor
The book of Ps 5:12 says “For you bless the righteous, O Lord ; you cover him with favor as with a shield.” This tells us that the righteous is covered with favour as a shield, the godly is surrounded by the Favour of God.
What is the favour of God? What does it entail and how does it affect our attitude in life?
Favour from the English dictionary, means “approval”, “support” or “liking for something/ someone”.
This means that when we say we are favoured by God, it means that we are approved by God or that God is our support. We can see it as we walking with the backing of God.
What does this mean for us?
- We can achieve the impossible:The favour of the Lord opens up doors of possibilities that would ordinarily not be made available for us. We can see that in the book of Esther 5. To approach the king at that time meant that you were invited by him. You couldn’t casually enter into the throne room or you risk execution. But because the favour of God was with Esther, when she entered into the palace, she found favour in the sight of the king up to the point that he told her he would give her half of his kingdom.
The same way that when you have the favour of God, doors of connections are opened. Things you would ordinarily not qualify for, you see yourself getting them.
- Men will favour us: When the favour of God is upon us naturally men will also favour us. We see that in the life of Joseph in Gen 39:3-4. Because the favour of the Lord was with Joseph, he found favour in the eyes of Potiphar in such a magnitude that Potiphar put him in charge of his household. Even when Joseph was in the prison, he also received the favour of men that he was put in charge of the prisoners.
- Qualifications are bypassed: When the favour of the Lord is upon a man, qualifications are bypassed. The person is selected for that position that he is naturally not qualified for. David received the favour of the Lord, and he was chosen to be a king amongst all his brothers who seemed better than he was.
How do we receive the Favour of God?
Thinking about walking in the favour of the Lord gets me excited and all but how do we receive the favour of the Lord? Is the favour of the Lord available for everyone?
- Be righteous / godly: To receive the favour of God, we must be righteous and live a godly life. Ps 5:12b says, “the Lord covers the righteous with favour as a shield”. So a requirement to receive the favour of God is to be righteous.
- Obedience / Total Surrender:To receive the favour of God, we must come to a place of obedience and total surrender to God’s plan. We must choose God first before any other thing.
- Learn the place of Honour: Sometimes, even when God has chosen to favour us, we bring a barrier called “dishonour”. We dishonour those around us while we expect God to use them to favour us. It is not so! When God wants to favour a man, He does so in partnership with other men and if you choose to dishonour those men, you’d probably not receive of the Lord.
In conclusion, we must know that as a child of God, we have the favour of the Lord. So wherever you go, understand that you are favoured of the Lord.
This week make this declaration:
“I receive the favour of the Lord. The favour of God surrounds me. Anywhere I go, I am favoured. God’s goodness and mercies follow me throughout this week! I am helped by God!”
