I am Fruitful
Passages: Jn 15
Song: Be Fruitful – Vashawn Mitchell .
The fruit is the part of the plant that carries the result and purpose of the plant, it carries the seed which is the reproductive ability of the plant and it is what reveals the identity of the plant. As believers, our fruit is the the result of our relationship with God, our fruits carry seeds that propagate the gospel and showcases our identity as believers. In John 15, the bible likens us to branches that are attached to Jesus, the true vine with God the father as the vine dresser. But the question is, what kind of branch are you?
Are you a branch with plenty leaves? That one that looks fruitful from afar because of its abundant leaves but carries no fruit. This brings to mind the passage in Matt 21:18-19 where Jesus sights a fig tree with plenty leaves from afar and goes to it expecting to see fruits only to find none and because of this he curses the tree. Are you a believer who in the midst of the spiritual hunger in the world has nothing to offer? That when people who are drawn to your plenty leaves come to you they leave hungry because they find nothing but leaves. Nothing but empty religion that profits no one.
Or are you a branch with tiny or sour fruits? Where the only gospel, good news or experience of Jesus you give leaves a sour taste in people’s mouths. Or maybe your fruits are so tiny just like producing watermelons the size of grapes. It simply shows that you are either not getting enough nutrients (the word of God) in you or you are feeding on wrong or unbalanced doctrine.
Or lastly and worse of all, are you a barren branch? One with no leave, no fruits just empty and dry. This is the worse state you can be because you are very close to being fire wood. The scripture says in Matt 7:19 (NIV) that “Every tree that does not bear good fruits is cut down and thrown into the fire”
The big question today is “Am I fruitful?”
As believers who aspire for growth and maturity, we must be able to ask ourselves this question sincerely. Not only that, we must also ask the Holy spirit to reveal to us the state of our lives and be ready to do what it takes to be fruitful, including being pruned. The bible in John 15 1-2(NIV) says “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. We must be intentional about abiding in the word of God and in His presence, make up your mind to remain in him and to die to the flesh daily (John 15: 36).
There is a call to be fruitful. The bible says in Matthew 3: 10 (NIV) says “The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. Reject fruitlessness today.
Say this prayer with me
Lord, please forgive me for my moments and seasons of unfruitfulness and for times when I have allowed people to leave hungry. Draw me close to your Word and your presence and help me to bear fruits that draw men closer to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
