Passages: Psalms 46

Song: Be Still and Know I am God- Travis Greene

Ps. 46:10 says “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”

In our lives, we are faced with storms and tribulations at one point on the other. During these times, we are tempted to be afraid, stressed, weak and confused. But as believers, the Lord is telling us to be still and know that He is God.

Why should we be still?

  1. God is our refuge (vs. 1): A refuge is a safe place. It is a place that gives protection or shelter from danger, trouble etc. God is saying that He is our place of protection, He is impenetrable and mighty. In Him, nothing can come close to you.
  2. God is our strength (vs. 1):  The Lord is our strength, not just spiritually but physically, emotionally, financially, mentally etc. When we are weak, we are to rely on Him, because in Him we receive the energy to do other things.
  3. God is our help (vs. 1): The Psalm lets us know that God is our help and not just any help but a well-proved help. That means His help can be trusted. I love the way TPT puts it “…You’re a proven help in time of trouble— more than enough and always available whenever I need you.” God is a present help, always ready and available to help you. He is not sitting on His throne laughing while you go through struggles but He is waiting for you to call Him and give Him way, so He can help you the way you ought to be helped.
  4. God is the Lord of Hosts (vs. 7): A name of God I love so much is Yahweh Sabaoth which means The Lord of Hosts or The Lord of Angel Armies. This tells me that God is all powerful and because He has my back, I have the Hosts of Heaven behind me.

We’ve seen some of the reasons why we should be still through some of the attributes of God.

How can we be still / What does it mean to be still?

  1. Do not be afraid (vs. 2): Being still entails that we are not afraid or anxious of anything.
  2. Trust in God: Being still involves us trusting God and surrendering our problems, fears, anxiety, etc. to God.
  3. Waiting for God’s instruction: Being still also means waiting for God’s instruction concerning the situation. It means allowing God to guide and direct you in that circumstance or struggle you’re in.
  4. Obeying / Following God: Being still involves going where He tells you to go, doing what He wants you to do and when He wants you to do it.

Know that God is interested in you. He is intentional about you and He wants you to involve Him in whatever you are doing.

His plan for you is of good and not of evil to bring you to an expected end.
