Passages: Matt. 11:28-30

Song: Cast all your cares – Gary Oliver

This is a phrase we see a lot, for some it’s just a cute quote, for others it’s a lifestyle based on the experiences they have had with God.

One bible passage I like is Matt 11:28 -30. It says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

This passage is always a comfort passage to me whenever I feel overwhelmed or exhausted as it told me about Jesus’ responsibility in carrying my burdens but when I studied this passage again I discovered something new; my own responsibility. First off, I had to check what a yoke meant, and these were what I saw:

  1. A yoke is like a collar worn on the neck to restrain.
  2. A yoke is worn by an Ox to enable them pull a cart.

When we look at the first meaning, a yoke is a collar worn on the neck to restrain, it gives a whole new understanding to the passage. Basically, when you carry the yoke of Jesus, you are restrained in the things you can do. 2 Cor. 5:14a reiterates this “For the love of Christ constraineth us;” or in some versions, it uses the word compels or controls. So the yoke of Jesus constrains us from taking certain actions we normally took.

The second meaning of the yoke is what is worn by the ox to enable them pull a cart. The yoke of Jesus we take up enables us to live as we ought to. It is the grace which Jesus has given us so we can live accordingly to His word. 2 Peter 1: 3 affirms this, saying “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,” The yoke of Jesus is that enablement.

At the end of the day, the yoke is the price we are to pay. It is the denial of your will and the acceptance of God’s will.

So basically, Matt. 11:28 – 30 is Jesus saying to us “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my collar of restraint upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light. It’ll enable you to live as you ought to.”

So today, drop your burdens, anxiety, worries at the feet of Jesus and take up His yoke, strength, grace and enablement so you can live the life He has mapped out for you.

Don’t take His load and still carry yours, do your part and allow God do His. Let Go and Let God!

Have a wonderful week.

You can only give your burden to Jesus when you have a relationship with Him. If you are not born again, know that God loves you so much, He sent His son to die for you. Experience the entirety of His love by praying this prayer “Lord Jesus, I recognize that I’m a sinner. I recognize that you died for me. Come into my heart Lord and be my personal Lord and saviour. Let me experience your love for me in all its dimensions in Jesus Name”.

If you prayed this prayer, congratulations and welcome into the family of God. Please do well to send us a text or WhatsApp message at 09063365637 or send us an email at flavouforsingles@gmail.com
