Fight the good fight

Passages: 1 Tim 6:11, 2 Tim 4:7

Song: I Will Trust – Fred Hammond

Paul in his letter to Timothy  in 1 Tim 6:11, told him “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”

And then in 2 Tim 4:7, while in prison, he told Timothy again “’I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

A lot of us have given up on the good fight of faith, some of us have even forgotten that there is a fight. Today is a reminder that we should fight the good fight of faith and endeavour to finish the race we have started.

Let me give an example to illustrate the different people that are found in the race. See if you can identify yourself in any of them and make amends where necessary.

Imagine the Christian race is a race track where we are running to a finish line.

The participants are athletes with white jerseys that are sparkling and unblemished . The condition for a successful race is  that you cross the finish line before the time is up and your jersey is still unblemished.

Let’s look at the different participants in the race:

  1. We have the athletes who have not even started the race. Their fellow athletes are already on the track but they have not started running. They are still waiting for something, what that is, we may never know.
  2. The second group of athletes are those who are running but are distracted by the people outside the race track. They keep stopping and going back to attend to the ones outside the race track. They are stained with the inks and paint of the outsiders.
  3. The third group of athletes are “running” at least that’s what they think but in reality they are running on one spot.
  4. The fourth group of athletes have grown tired and weary, some have slowed down while the others have stopped entirely.
  5. The fifth group of athletes are those who have stopped just before the finish line. Maybe they thought there was no point, or they thought they had been running with no end in sight.
  6. The last group of athletes are those whose focus are on the finish line. They are not distracted by the noise the outsiders, they get tired but refresh themselves and keep on running. They understand the goal and ensure that they finish without stains and blemishes.

Can you identify yourself in any of these groups. If you’re anything besides the last group, then it’s a time to look inward and start running.

How then, do we fight the good fight?

1 Tim 6:11 highlights things that we must pursue:

  1. Pursue righteousness: We must always have a desire to be in right standing with God. We must have a hunger and thirst for intimacy with God. When we have intimate relationship with God, we are able to stand by His grace and our eyes are focused on Him.
  2. Pursue godliness: Your life must reflect that you are in a right relationship with God. You cannot claim to be righteous or a Christian and be living in sin. Live a holy life and flee from sin.
  3. Pursue faith: We must believe and trust in God. This is very important because there are times in our lives where things may look like they are not moving forward, where it may seem like God is far. When our trust is in God, we are able to believe that God is in the midst of us and we are not distracted.
  4. Pursue love: Love God fiercely and love others like yourself. In loving God, you are obedient to His every instruction.  In loving others, we treat them like we are to treat ourselves, with care and respect.
  5. Pursue steadfastness: One scripture I like is 1 Cor 15:58 that says “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” We must persevere and be committed to God. Do not compromise and be determined to do God’s will.
  6. Pursue gentleness: One definition I really love of gentleness is “Gentleness is strength under control”. This means that you are able to submit your emotions, thoughts and will to God even when it’s not what we want to do. We must submit to the leading of the Holy Spirit to run this race well.

On our own, we can’t do any of this. Therefore, we must ask the Lord for strength and the Holy Spirit for guidance so we can finish and finish well.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to finish strong. Help me to keep my eyes on you in this race of life. I want to be able to say ‘I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. ‘ In Jesus name. Amen.

If you are not born again, know that God loves you so much, He sent His son to die for you. Experience the entirety of His love by  praying this prayer “Lord Jesus, I recognize that I’m a sinner. I recognize that you died for me. Come into my heart Lord and be my personal Lord and saviour. Let me experience your love for me in all its dimensions in Jesus Name”.

If you prayed this prayer, congratulations and welcome into the family of God. Please do well to send us a text or WhatsApp message at 09063365637 or send us an email at flavouforsingles@gmail.com
