His Promises are Sure
Passages: 2 Cor. 1:20
Song: Yes and Amen by Chris Tomlin
The scripture is full of men and women who God made promises to such as Abraham, Noah and the people of Israel. And just like these people, God has made promises to you, yes you. And God who was able to fulfil those impossible looking promises is also able to fulfil his promises to you. 2 Cor 1:20 says “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And through Him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God. (NIV). So no matter how grand or impossible looking those promises seem, God is telling you that He is able to fulfil it.
So what are these promises? There are so many promises contained in the scripture that I can only list a few. He has made promises to us of who He is and what He can do. He has promised us:
- That his love for us will never fail (James 1:17, 1 Chron 16:34, Isaiah 54:10)
- That He is good (Psalm 145:9), 100:5, 34:8, Nahum 1:7)
- That He is with us (Deut. 31:8, Josh 1:9, Psalm 23:24)
- That He will answer our prayers (Mark 11:24, John 14:13, Luke 11:9-13, Jer. 29:12, Ps 102:17, 145:18)
- That He will save and forgive us (John 3:16, 1John 1:9, 2 Chron 7:14, John 8:36)
- That He has a plan for us (Jer. 29:11)
- Healing(1 Peter 2:24, Jer. 17:14, Isaiah 53:5, Psalm 41:3
- Provision (Prov. 3:5-6, Matt 7:9-11, 2 Cor 9:8
- Good things (2 Sam 7:28, Psalm 84:!1,
- Strength when we are weak (Isaiah 40:29, 31, 41:10, 43:2)
- Peace and safety (Isaiah 16:31, Phil 4:6-7)
So what do we do to obtain these promises.
The first step in obtaining His promises for you is to know and believe that he has made a promise to you, in fact many promises. If you do not know this fact, you would not be able to build any expectation.
The second step is that you must believe that those promises are sure and true. The bible says in Numbers 23:19 that “God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” (NIV). God is not a man he keeps His words. He will not change His mind concerning you and He is capable enough to fulfil His words.
Thirdly and very importantly, we must obey the instructions that are attached to the promise. For example the numerous promises God made to the Israelites were contingent on them loving and serving God and Him only. Unfortunately they failed to keep their part of it leading to years of delay in the fulfillment of the promises. If you’re wondering if He has given you an instruction fell free to ask him and wait patiently for His answer.
Lastly, we must wait in eager expectation. This point cannot be over emphasized because the calendar of God is different from that of man. God promised Abraham a son in Gen 12 when he was 75 years old but it was not until Gen 21 when Abraham was 100 years old that the promise was eventually fulfilled.
As believers who strive for growth and maturity, we must not fail to realize that we also have a part to play in the fulfillment of God’s promises to us. Just because God has promised you something does not mean that you should just fold your hands and expect it to happen just like that. God partners with men in order to bring his promises to pass.
